Cold Bore, Clean Bore, Fouling Shot (why the first round out of a clean rifle isn't the second)

The first shot from a clean, cool rifle is not the second. Every serious precision shooter learns this the day a hunt or a match comes down to a cold-bore round that landed three inches from where the group would have been. The behavior is measurable, it's often repeatable, and it can be corrected for — but only by shooters who know their rifle's cold-bore pattern rather than assuming.
§ 01Terminology That Gets Mixed Up
Three terms get thrown around interchangeably, and they shouldn't be.
Cold bore refers to a barrel at ambient temperature — one that hasn't been fired recently enough to be warm. A rifle taken from a truck on a 40°F morning is cold-bore. A rifle after a five-round string, sitting for four minutes, is not.
Clean bore refers to a barrel that has been mechanically cleaned — solvent, patches, brush — to remove copper and carbon fouling. A clean bore has no combustion residue coating the rifling.
Fouled bore is the reverse: a barrel with rounds through it since the last cleaning. The rifling is coated with a thin layer of copper (from the bullet jacket) and carbon (from the powder). Most rifles shoot more consistently from a fouled bore than from a freshly-cleaned one, which is why the first round out of a clean rifle is often set aside as a fouling shot.
These conditions combine. A rifle can be cold and clean (worst case for consistency in most rifles), cold and fouled (best case for the first shot in the field), warm and clean, or warm and fouled. Each condition has different behavior, and the cold-bore log tracks all of them.
§ 02What Actually Shifts, and Why
Several things change between the first round out of a rifle and the fifth. Not all of them matter for every rifle, but each matters for some.
Barrel temperature and metallurgy. A cold barrel is dimensionally slightly different from a warm one. The bore expands with heat, the crown may deform microscopically under thermal stress, and the barrel itself flexes differently on the action. On some rifles this changes point of impact by 0.1 mil; on others, by half a mil.
Bedding and stock interface. A cold rifle has different tension between the barreled action and the stock than a warm one. Wood stocks are famously temperature- and humidity-sensitive; even a rigid chassis or aluminum-bedded stock shifts slightly with temperature.
Bore condition. A freshly-cleaned bore has a slightly different friction profile than a fouled one. The first bullet pushed through experiences slightly different acceleration, and often slightly different peak velocity, than subsequent rounds. Chronograph a fresh-clean rifle across the first five shots and you'll frequently see the first round 20–40 fps off the settled average.
The shooter. Human factors compound: the first shot on a cold rifle is also often the first shot in a session, when position isn't settled, breathing pattern isn't rehearsed, and the trigger break is being felt rather than repeated. Some of what looks like cold-bore is actually cold-shooter.
The distinction matters: cold-bore behavior corrects with a hold. Cold-shooter behavior corrects with dry-fire, position rehearsal, and settling in before the shot. A shooter who blames every first-round flyer on the rifle never fixes the actual problem.
§ 03Measuring Your Rifle's Cold-Bore Behavior
Measuring cold-bore behavior requires patience and a range you can access repeatedly. The process is straightforward, but each data point takes a full session to collect.
The single-session protocol
Arrive at the range with a cold rifle. Note the bore state (clean or fouled). Set up in your standard shooting position at 100 or 200 yards, on a marked aiming point that lets you measure impact offset to within 0.1 mil.
Fire one round at the aiming point. Spot the impact. Do not adjust the rifle. Wait five minutes for the barrel to settle back toward ambient, then fire another. Repeat until you've fired five to ten rounds spaced enough that each is effectively cold. Each of these is a cold-bore data point.
The multi-session protocol
A single session tells you what cold-bore looks like on that day. A cold-bore log across five to ten sessions tells you whether the pattern is consistent enough to correct for. Fire one cold-bore round per session, log the impact offset from the group center of the session's remaining rounds, and note the bore condition and weather.
After ten sessions, look at the log. If the cold-bore offset is consistent — the same direction, within 0.1 mil — you have a correction to hold. If it varies wildly, either the rifle doesn't have a repeatable cold-bore behavior or you're seeing cold-shooter effects that need to be isolated with dry-fire.
§ 04Building a Cold-Bore Log
The log itself can be a page in a range book, a spreadsheet, or a note on the back of your dope card. What matters is the fields, not the medium.
- Date and location. Weather and altitude context.
- Rifle and load. Cold-bore behavior is per-rifle and per-load; a different load in the same rifle may have a different offset.
- Bore state. Clean and dry, clean and oiled, fouled from N rounds since last cleaning.
- Cold-shot impact offset from group center. In mils or MOA, in the direction of offset.
- Ambient temperature. Barrel temperature is a function of ambient over the previous hour.
- Notes. Anything unusual — first shot of a new lot, first shot after a scope adjustment, first shot after a barrel-cleaning session with a different solvent than usual.
Over time the log will show one of three patterns: a consistent offset you can correct with a hold, a scattered pattern with no discernible direction (either the rifle's cold-bore is genuinely random, or the shooter's cold-shooter effects are dominating the signal), or a state-dependent pattern where clean-and-cold shoots differently from fouled-and-cold and you need two corrections instead of one.
For most factory precision rifles with production-quality bedding, a consistent 0.2–0.4 mil cold-bore offset in one direction is normal and correctable. If your rifle shows 1 mil or more of cold-bore drift, the bedding or the barrel-action interface is worth investigating.
§ 05Managing It in the Field
The whole point of the log is to make the first shot of the day count. A hunt rarely gives a second chance at the animal; a match doesn't reward the group center you would have shot after the third round.
In the field, apply the correction as a hold. If your log shows a consistent 0.3 mil right cold-bore offset, hold 0.3 mil left of the desired impact for the first shot. Second shot onward, the rifle is warming and the hold returns to the dope card value.
Foul the bore before the shot when possible. A hunter with a rifle that's been cleaned since the last hunt should fire a fouling shot at the range before the hunt starts. Two rounds through a clean bore usually settles the friction profile enough that the third shot is on the group. The cost of two rounds is trivial compared to a lost trophy.
Track lot changes. A new lot of ammunition can have a cold-bore behavior different from the old lot, even if the group center is the same. When switching lots, log the first cold-bore round from the new lot before trusting the existing correction.
The first round from a cold, clean rifle is not the second. That's not a defect — it's a property to measure and correct for.
Log five to ten sessions. If the pattern is consistent, hold the correction on shot one. The dope card belongs on shot two.
