Zeroing a Precision Rifle: 100, 200, or MPBR (the choice matters more than the yardage)

Zero is the range at which the reticle and the point of impact meet with no adjustment dialed. Every correction you'll ever apply is measured from that reference. Choose it deliberately — the choice matters more than the specific yardage, and it should follow from what you actually shoot at.
§ 01What Zero Actually Means
A rifle scope's line of sight and a bullet's trajectory are two different curves. The line of sight is straight. The bullet's flight path is a parabola — it rises above the line of sight, crosses it, arcs back down, and crosses again before hitting the earth.
Because the scope sits above the bore (typically 1.5 to 2.5 inches for a precision rifle), the bullet starts below the line of sight at the muzzle. If the rifle is zeroed at 100 yards, the bullet leaves the muzzle low, rises, crosses the line of sight roughly 30–40 yards downrange, continues to rise, peaks, and comes back down to cross the line of sight again at 100 yards. That second crossing is the zero.
Beyond the zero, gravity dominates and the bullet falls below the line of sight faster and faster with distance. That fall is what your dope card is describing — how much elevation correction you need to raise the line of sight to re-intersect the bullet's path at each downrange yardage.
The zero range is not a property of the rifle. It's a choice about where you want the two curves to intersect. Different zeros make different downrange behaviors easier to think about.
§ 02The 100-Yard Zero
The 100-yard zero is the standard for a precision rifle. Every correction from zero out is a positive elevation dial. The dope card has no negative numbers — every yardage past 100 requires you to come up.
The advantage is simplicity. Range the target, look at the card, dial up. There is no near-range holdover to remember, no maximum-range calculation to double-check. It's the correct choice for a rifle whose primary use is engaging targets at deliberate, ranged distances — long-range hunting, precision matches with called yardages, and the majority of PRS-style shooting.
The downside is small but real: for shots inside 200 yards where there isn't time to dial, the shooter has to hold over — the bullet at 200 yards impacts roughly 3–4 inches low, which matters on smaller targets even at that range.
§ 03The 200-Yard Zero
The 200-yard zero pushes the entire trajectory up by about an inch and a half. The bullet is high at 100 yards, on at 200, low at 300, and steadily lower from there. Most factory hunting rifles ship sighted-in this way because it's a good all-purpose compromise.
For a precision rifle, the 200-yard zero is a defensible choice when the shooter engages targets from 0 to about 300 yards without time to dial — think a hunter in mixed cover, a PRS shooter on a stage that starts at 150 and pushes out to 500, or a defensive setup where a rapid shot inside 200 is the primary use case.
The downside for pure precision work is that dope-card math becomes slightly less intuitive. The shooter has to remember that 100 yards is a hold-under, 200 is on, and everything past 200 comes up. Under time pressure, one number will get confused with another.
A 200-yard zero on a rifle that will realistically only engage past 300 is an accessory, not a feature. Choose your zero for the yardages the rifle actually shoots.
§ 04Maximum Point-Blank Range
Maximum Point-Blank Range (MPBR) is a zero chosen to keep the bullet within a defined vital zone — usually 6 inches — from the muzzle out to the farthest yardage possible. The bullet arcs above the line of sight, peaks, and comes back down, staying within the 3-inch-above / 3-inch-below envelope through the entire trajectory.
For a 6.5 Creedmoor 140-grain load, an MPBR zero using a 6-inch vital zone puts the actual zero somewhere around 250 yards and gives a maximum point-blank range around 290 yards. Anywhere from the muzzle to about 290 yards, a hold on the center of a 6-inch vital hits the vital.
MPBR is a hunter's zero. It's designed to eliminate the need to dial for shots inside the useful range of the cartridge, trading absolute precision for speed of engagement. For pure precision-rifle work — where every shot is ranged and dialed — it's the wrong choice, because it introduces a curve into the dope card that makes short-range corrections counterintuitive.
For a general-purpose rifle that hunts, defends, and occasionally engages at range, MPBR is a strong compromise. For a match rifle or a dedicated long-range platform, it is not.
§ 05How to Actually Confirm It
A zero that isn't confirmed at the intended range isn't a zero. Boresighting gets the rifle onto paper; live fire at the actual zero yardage confirms it.
The process
Start at 25 yards to get onto paper. A bullet that lands 1 inch below the aiming point at 25 yards is roughly on the way to a 100-yard zero — the ballistic curve is heading up. Move to the actual zero distance (100 or 200 yards) and shoot three-round groups. Adjust the scope in the direction of the group center — reticle moves toward point of impact, or the turret label reads the direction to move the impact.
Confirm the zero cold. First shot from a clean, cool barrel is where a defensive rifle will start every engagement and where a hunting rifle will take its first shot. If the cold-bore round doesn't print with the group, either your zero is off or your rifle has a cold-bore behavior worth logging.
Verify at distance. Shoot at 300 or 400 yards after confirming zero. Match the impact to your solver's prediction. If the actual drop is more than 0.2 mil off the predicted, your zero, your velocity, or your BC needs a second look before you take the rifle further out.
Zero is a choice, not a spec. 100 yards for pure precision. 200 for mixed-range work. MPBR for a hunter's rifle.
Whichever you pick, confirm cold and verify at distance. A zero that only works at the zero yardage isn't a zero — it's a hope.
